Water Service Line Inventory for Lead & Copper Rule Revisions
Our water system must develop and maintain an inventory of all service line materials within our service area, as required under the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Lead and Copper Rule Revisions (LCRR). Our initial service line inventory was submitted to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) in October of 2024.
The inventory includes the entirety of the service line from the water main. The ownership terms represented in the DNR materials inventory template can be defined as follows:
- Street-Side: The portion of the water service line that is typically owned by the water system, which usually includes the service line from the water main to a curb stop or shut off valve.
- Property-Side: The portion of the water service line that is typically not owned by the water system, which usually includes the service line from a curb stop or shut off valve to the interior of the building or structure.
All water systems with lead, galvanized requiring replacement, or lead status unknown service lines in their inventory pursuant to § 141.84(a) must inform all persons served by the water system at the service connection with a lead, galvanized requiring replacement, or lead status unknown service line. Information to determine the type of pipe material in your home and steps to reduce the risk of lead in your drinking water can be found here.
The water system must provide the initial notification within 30 days of completion of the lead service line inventory required under § 141.84 and repeat the notification on an annual basis until the entire service connection is no longer a lead, galvanized requiring replacement, or lead status unknown service line.
